The Harris Federation of South London Schools is a single charitable legal entity to which all of the Harris Academies belong. Its aim is to operate as a group of collaborating Academies for the benefit of young people in South London.
In each of the past three years improvement in 5A-C grades including English and Maths across the group has been 6%, 8% and 8% respectively (in 2008 and 2009 improvement was approximately four times the national average and roughly double the Academy average).
From being unpopular and undersubscribed schools in their previous existence, our group of Academies is now oversubscribed by 5:1.
Our strategic aim is nothing short of transformation of educational opportunities and with this in mind the Federation has so far overseen an investment of approximately £70m in new buildings and we currently have approximately £100million of works under construction to provide the finest possible educational facilities for young people and their communities in London.
The Harris Federation is governed by the Harris Federation Main Board which comprises the Chairmen of Governors of each Academy along with non-executive directors selected for their particular expertise. The Chairman of the Board is our sponsor, Lord Harris of Peckham.
Although the main board carries the legal responsibilities of Governors for all of the Academies, each Academy has a local Governing Body. This structure allows the Federation to provide central strategic direction whilst maintaining localness.
Whilst the Federation Board provides strategic direction, the key operational management group is the Principals’ Executive Group, chaired by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Dan Moynihan. This group meets half termly and reports directly to the Harris Federation Board through the CEO. The CEO manages the Federation on a day by day basis on behalf of the Board.
The Harris Federation Central Office supports the work of the Federation and leads in the set up, support and monitoring of Harris Academies. This is a small central office comprising the CEO, his PA Becky Elwin, The Director of Finance and Operational Development, Mike Antoniou, Projects Director Chris Randall and ICT Director James Penny along with supporting ICT and Finance staff.

Lord Harris of Peckham is the major sponsor of the Harris Academies in South London.
Lord Harris was born in 1942, was educated at Streatham Grammar School and is married with four children. In 1957 he took over the running of the family business of three carpet shops and is now chairman and chief executive of Carpetright plc, which has over 500 shops in the UK and Europe. Lord Harris and his whole family are personally committed to providing the best possible education at the Harris Schools and to giving all students every opportunity to succeed in their chosen careers.
Lord Harris’s vision is that rather than working in isolation, the Harris Academies will work together as a federation. This will enable the schools to use their combined resources and collective expertise in order to assist each other and so raise standards faster than would be the case with schools working in isolation.
